Star Gap Trail Overlook Extravaganza

Overview. Having hiked both Star Gap Arch and a couple of these overlooks earlier in the year, I wanted to do a full exploration that is detailed here. The shear number of overlooks may be unrivaled in Red River Gorge with each presenting a unique view of the area. My favorite of the bunch was also the longest walk - going out to the end of the horseshoe-shaped ridge to the eastern edge of Cruise Liner Rock.

Route Type | Out and Back ‘Fingers’
Total Distance | 8.7 miles
Overall Difficulty | Easy to Moderate with Short Scrambles
*this hike is unmarked, experienced hikers only

Trailhead. Star Gap Trail is unmarked and a short way up Double Arch Trail. Parking is available at the Auxier Ridge Trailhead located at the end of Tunnel Ridge Road off KY-15. [map]

Trail navigation. Since I wanted to explore all the overlooks, navigation was relatively simple - turn left and left and left and left…well, you get the idea. The key on unmarked trails is to identify well traveled trails that are firm underfoot. Some of the spurs here were more traveled than others with the most heavily trafficked trails leading to the biggest and best views with the exception of my favorite - Cruise Liner Rock.

CAUTION - Cliffs. Be careful to avoid getting too close the edge of cliffs, as this is the leading cause of serious injury and death when hiking in Red River Gorge.

CAUTION - Poisonous snakes. While the gorge is within the range of timber rattlesnakes, copperheads are the most common poisonous snake encountered. Stay alert on the trail, as snakes are commonly found taking in the warmth of the trail. Give them a wide berth or wait for them to move off the trail.

CAUTION - Bears. Black bears are growing in number throughout Daniel Boone National Forest. Be sure to follow bear safety precautions. [Be Bear Aware by US Forest Service]
