Overview. While this is arguably the best sunset spot in Kentucky, it is without question the biggest! The observation tower was installed in 2003, and any visit will show what a wonderful investment this turned out to be. If you get a change to stick around after dark, the stars are rarely brighter anywhere in the Commonwealth.

Trail navigation. There are two trails here - one is the Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail that goes to Elkhorn City to the northeast, the other leads to the tower. Take the southernmost of the two on double track trail until reaching the first of many, many steps. Though I rated this as moderate, the steps can be a challenge for some. Take your time and stop for a spell at some of the platforms that offer varying views around you. One of these has a view that I particularly enjoy - almost as much as up top. Retrace your steps when you’ve finished taking it all in.

CAUTION - Poisonous snakes. Timber rattlesnakes and copperheads can be found in the region. Stay alert on the trail, as snakes are commonly found taking in the warmth of the trail. Give them a wide berth or wait for them to move off the trail.

CAUTION - Bears. Black bears can be found throughout the Pine Mountain region. Be sure to follow bear aware practices. [Be Bear Aware by US Forest Service]
