Sunrise at Chained Rock

Overview. This is among the best sunrise spots in Kentucky and boy did I have a GREAT morning here! With fog filling the valleys and mountain knobs rising above, this was a special scene. Down below it was like a waterfall of morning fog flowing northwest through the gap.

Trailhead. At the top of Pine Mountain, the trailhead is on the southeastern end of the parking lot with the trail starting with a descent down a staircase. [map]

Trail navigation. Begin by moving down the staircase and reach a well marked trail intersection. Turn left (east) here and continue on the trail past the next intersection to reach Chained Rock. Once there, move counterclockwise to the edge of the rock outcropping, swing back around under the chain, and up the trail to reach the ‘knobby’ rock above. Take care with your steps on this slanted, uneven rock slab on your way back to the dirt trail. Retrace your steps to return to the parking lot.

CAUTION - Poisonous snakes. Timber rattlesnakes and copperheads can be found in the region. Stay alert on the trail, as snakes are commonly found taking in the warmth of the trail. Give them a wide berth or wait for them to move off the trail.

CAUTION - Bears. Black bears are growing in number throughout Eastern Kentucky. Be sure to follow bear safety precautions. [Be Bear Aware by US Forest Service]
