Little Stony Creek Gorge Overlook

Overview. I have a rule. If there is an unmarked trail, check it out because odds are it’ll lead somewhere cool. This is the case here, as I passed a small pull-off with distinct trails when driving down to Little Stony Falls. This trail runs the ridge above the falls and comes to a point overlooking gorges in three directions. It is an EPIC view so don’t miss it!

Trailhead. There is enough space to accommodate four or five cars on Forest Road 701 just south of the intersection with Forest Road 700. [map]

Trail navigation. From the parking area, there are two trails - one left, one right. Take the one on the left and head northeast along the ridgeline. The area appears to have suffered a fire at some point in the recent past and is largely exposed to the sun. Follow along the well-defined trail to the end where you’ll be treated to a magnificent view. Retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.

‘Painted rocks’. Some hikers lose their minds when they see spray paint tattooed all over rocks. I don’t. The fact is a small percentage of human beings will act on the need to leave their mark. While it’s ugly (I’ve only seen one carving that would qualify as art), better to accept it and move on than get hot and bothered over it.

CAUTION - Cliffs. Respect the edge and keep a safe distance. Every year dozens of hikers die falling from cliffs. Don’t be that hiker.

CAUTION - Poisonous snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Stay alert on the trail, and if you see one, give it a wide berth or wait for it to move off the trail.

CAUTION - Bears. There are plenty of black bears in the area, so it pays to take appropriate precautions including bear-safe food storage, carrying bear spray (especially when hiking alone), and knowing what to do when you encounter a bear. [Be Bear Aware by US Forest Service]
